She was the Clinical Lead of Lifeblood’s Genomics Pilot Project and authored the “Genomics White Paper for the International Blood Sector” which explored how genomics was set to transform the blood sector through the delivery of Precision Medicine to the recipients of blood products and tissues.

Anastazia has been an active member of ANZSBT since joining and holds positions on both the Education Standing Committee and Clinical Practice Improvement Standing Committee. She is a member of the Clinical Reference Group for the NBA’s Patient Blood Management Modules and the Chair-elect of RCPA QAP Transfusion Advisory Committee.

Clin. A/Prof Philip Crispin

Dr Crispin is a clinical haematologist and Clinical Director of the Blood Counts Program at Canberra Hospital and lecturer at Australian National University Medical School.

He serves on the Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion’s Clinical Practice Improvement Committee and on the National Blood Transfusion Committee of Red Cross LifeBlood.

Dr Crispin has been involved in developing perioperative and obstetric patient blood management programs, including the appropriate identification of iron deficiency to best target therapy. He has recently completed a PhD in patient blood management. He has current research interests in alternative measurement strategies to guide red cell transfusions, therapy for bleeding in thrombocytopenia, intravenous immunoglobulin use and patient-centred care.

Dr Amanda Ormerod

Dr Amanda Ormerod is a specialist Haematologist in public practice since 2016, previously working at the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as a Transfusion Medicine Specialist and at Bairnsdale Regional Health Service as a Clinical Haematologist.

Dr Ormerod currently works for Latrobe regional hospital and provides Haematology services clinically for Latrobe regional hospital, Bairnsdale Regional Health Service and Central Gippsland Health.

Dr Ormerod also works for Dorevitch pathology as a laboratory haematologist. Dr Ormerod is trained to perform Bone marrow aspirate and trephines for patients.
Dr Ormerod provides services that encompass management of a diverse range of haematological disorders.

Having trained at the University of Sydney, she completed her advanced training at Barwon Health, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Peninsula Health. She was admitted as Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists in 2015.

Dr Ormerod is interested in transfusion medicine and has worked with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. She is interested in complex transfusion issues and continues to enjoy transfusion medicine. Dr Ormerod is the current Blood Users Group Victoria Chair.
Dr Ormerod has long had a passion for rural medicine, having worked as a medical scientist for 4 years in Tanzania prior to studying medicine.

Ms Alison Badger
Honorary Secretary

Alison is a Senior Scientist with the New Zealand Blood Service, serving 7 years in the National Red Cell Serology Reference Laboratory and now as a part of the Technical Support team for Tissue Banking Services.

Alison trained as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Scotland and spent 10 years with the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service specialising in red cell serology. She achieved an MSc in Transfusion, Transplantation and Tissue Banking in 2011.

Alison was awarded a scholarship to support professional development in 2019, where she travelled to the USA to receive training in the Monocyte Monolayer Assay (MMA). After project managing the validation and implementation of the MMA, the New Zealand Blood Service now offer this service to patients where transfusion requirements can be challenging.

Alison is a member of the Transfusion Science Standing Committee.

Ms Rebecca McLean
Councillor

Rebecca McLean is the Clinical Nurse Specialist in Blood Management at Perth Children’s Hospital. Rebecca has been in a transfusion role, since 2014, with previous experience in nursing management and Haematology / bone marrow transplant nursing. Rebecca has a keen interest in safe and appropriate administration of blood products, as well as haemovigilance.

She has presented quality improvement initiatives at the national Blood conference and received the inaugural “transfusion Professional award in Clinical Transfusion Practice” in 2017.

Rebecca is the current chair of the Western Australian Transfusion Education (Wanted) group, which consists of scientists, and transfusion nurses from WA hospitals, and ensures that transfusion practices within WA hospitals not only adheres to national and state guidelines, but resources created are aligned across all sites.

Rebecca has completed the Graduate Certificate in Transfusion Practice with first class honours. She would like to see the course be re-instated/re-developed for future nurses with an interest in Transfusion.
She is an active member of the ANZSBT Education Standing committee and the Transfusion Professionals Network (TPN) and is passionate about nurses having a voice within the society.

After identifying a gap in blood transfusion educational material for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, Rebecca developed a pictorial and simple English brochure “Yarning about Blood”, a tool to help medical staff discuss consent to blood products, including benefits and risks, as well as alternatives to blood products for these patients. Yarning about Blood is now available as a National resource via the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood website www.transfusion.com.au.

Assoc. Prof Tina Noutsos

A/Prof Tina Noutsos is a Senior Specialist Haematologist with a special interest in transfusion at Royal Darwin Hospital, NT, and is Head of the Global and Tropical Health Division/Senior Research Fellow at Menzies School of Health Research. She has over 13 years’ experience in rural specialist haematology practice, and an extensive track record of working for and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) peoples in rural and remote Australia.

Her research interests focus on improving evidence-based transfusion practice for First Nations peoples, and in rural and remote settings. She is a world expert on snakebite-associated thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA), a World Health Organization declared neglected tropical disease, and serious blood clotting complication of snakebite.

She is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, haematologist lead of the NT Transfusion Committee, and NT expert member of the multijurisdictional Blood Matters Serious Transfusion Incident Reporting System (STIR) Expert Group.
