Dr Peter Flanagan

Peter Flanagan

National Medical Director New Zealand Blood Service.

Involved in several professional societies including ANZSBT, member 1999 onwards, and Councillor since 2003, BBTS, member 1988 onwards, Honorary Secretary, 1995-1998, ISBT, member 1996 onwards, Board of Directors 2006-2010 and AABB.

International involvement includes membership of several committees:
ISBT Jean Juilliard Prize Committee; ISBT/ICSH Expert Panel in Molecular Biology; Section Editor Vox Sanguinis 1998 onwards.

Involved in the practice of Transfusion Medicine and Haematology since 1983, initially in the UK and more recently in New Zealand . My interest in transfusion initially related to blood safety and quality systems. During the last 5 years in NZ this has however broadened.

I am keen to see a multidisciplinary approach to improving the overall quality of practice of transfusion. This should, as far as possible be evidence based. I believe that the ANZSBT has a real opportunity to take a professional leadership in this area and am keen to promote this as the newly-elected President.
